When the Premier announced the Government's Social Inclusion Initiative in 2002, he also established the Social Inclusion Unit. The Unit is located in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
The Unit supports the Board by undertaking research, analysing data and systems, convening cross-agency working groups, and leading community engagement and consultation processes.
Staff in the Unit are often seconded from other departments and agencies to work on key initiatives. In the spirit of joining up across Government, several departments have funded some of the positions in the Unit, demonstrating their commitment to this way of working.
This diversity of talent brings together specialist staff with relevant experience and insight. It has enabled the Unit to provide comprehensive and alternative perspectives on social issues, research options and solutions.
Central to the way the Social Inclusion Unit approaches its work is the important link between social inclusion, environmental sustainability and economic development.
